“NO, we are not buying sugary cereals, Joe” she said sternly, while pushing on her cart full of groceries.

And the 3 year old started screaming like a banshee.

The passersby groaned, glared and gawked. But she remained calm and composed. She could bribe him into silence, but she is sticking to her guns.

WHAM!

The kid knocks down a bunch of stuffs on to the floor. I tried to help, but she stops me saying the kiddo should do it.

Bravo, Madam for not buckling under pressure.

So, is it good parenting? Or is misbehaving child = bad parenting?

  1. Good for her not buying the cereal despite the tantrum. As for the second, if she made the child pick the things up, good for her.

    1. I know Janet, often times people are insensitive towards the parents, and call it bad parenting. What do you have to say to that.

  2. If she starts giving in she's done for. Apparently the "terrible twos" has extended into age three. There was a time period when I didn't take my son with me to the store. This was after he tried to climb a display of canned goods. Some mothers don't have a choice though. Good story and well written. : )

    1. I know what you mean. My son is 20 months old and I am just about beginning to face this situation. Guess, I have to stop taking him along like you did. Thanks for stopping by.

  3. I'm not sure how this fits the helmet photo, but in my opinion she should have stuck the child in the cart with the groceries if he has a tendency to behave that badly. No she shouldn't give in to him, but she also should have taught him by now that a temper tantrum will have dire consequences.

    1. You said it Mam, even I don't know how it fits but that's what clicked me when I looked at the picture. To your second point, well, I am not sure he would have stayed in the cart that calmly. And she is exactly trying to teach him how to behave. Sometimes, with kids it is easier said then done.

      Thanks for stopping by.

  4. Dear Moushmi,

I work in a grocery store. If this incident happened in my store, I'd pin a medal on this mom. Good for her. The child might throw a tantrum now (which is normal) but will be a responsible adult as a result.
I'm also the mother of three grown sons. I once had to make my youngest wash swear words off our neighbor's driveway that he'd written there in chalk. He was about 6 and the words were misspelled. It was funny and I had to fight to not let him see me laugh.

At any rate a good story that gives us pause. .

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

    1. Dear Rochelle,

You said it with this comment what I was trying to convey with the post. I am kinda beginning to face the same stuffs with my 20 months old son. Although washing the misspelled swear words of the driveway steals the cake here.

      Thank you so much!
